THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 2, 2009.

Harold "Swede" Howard, 82, of Elkhart, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery near Alleman.

Harold Howard was born February 15, 1927 at home in rural Ankeny to Lloyd and Essie (Hildreth) Howard. He married Dorothy Muehlenthaler on September 21, 1947.

He farmed in and around Elkhart and Ankeny until retirement. He was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Kiwanis, and the Polk County Farm Bureau. He was a former councilman for the City of Elkhart. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Howard of Elkhart; four children, Melinda (Marvin) Vander Velden of Pleasant Hill, Preston (Stephanie) Howard of Fosston, MN, Debbie (Dave) Humphrey of Elkhart, and Jeff (Beth) Howard of Elkhart; ten grandchildren; and five great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Lawrence; and two sisters, Hazel Moeckly and Lucille Liljegren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ankeny Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Salem United Church of Christ or North Polk Athletic Booster Club.
