THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

Maria Elisabeth Fouad (nee Leal) passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Fort Collins, Colo., of complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Allnutt Drake Road Chapel, 650 W. Drake, Fort Collins, Colo. A reception for family and friends will follow the service, at the same location.

She was born June 1, 1929, in Brazil, and came to the United States for graduate study in Iowa. In 1953, she married Aziz Fouad, distinguished professor emeritus at Iowa State University. They were long time residents of Ames, where she taught foreign languages at ISU and co-authored an introductory Spanish text for college students. Elisabeth loved to cook, quilt, weave, garden and play tennis, and was an active supporter of the arts in Ames.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Aziz Fouad; her daughter and son-in-law, Nadya Fouad and Robert Leitheiser; son and daughter-in-law, Sam Fouad and Jill Norman; and grandchildren Nick Leitheiser and Erin Sapp, Andrew Leitheiser, Patrick Leitheiser, Noah Fouad and Mickaela Fouad. She also is survived by many siblings, nieces and nephews, including sisters, Maria Teresa Leal de Martinez, of Houston, and Maria Odilia McBride, of Lufkin, Texas.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends, and especially remembered for her gentle and loving nature. The family also wishes to extend special gratitude and appreciation to the staffs of Clarebridge Cottage and Hospice of Larimer County for the loving care and attention they devoted to Elisabeth over the past years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Elisabeth’s memory to either Pathways Hospice, Community Care for Northern Colorado, Memorial Donations, 305 Carpenter Road, Fort Collins, CO 80525, or Elderhaus Adult Day Programs Inc., 605 S. Shields St., Fort Collins, CO. 80521.
