Marilyn JoAnn Hokel, 76, of Huxley, died of leukemia, on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A visitation was held on Sunday, May 24, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 25, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. Burial followed in Fjeldberg Cemetery.
Marilyn Hokel was born January 7, 1933 in Goldfield to Joseph and Gladys (Beisell) Gangstead. She graduated from Goldfield High School in 1950. She graduated from Waldorf College in 1952 and was a proud member of the Waldorf choir. She was employed as the Huxley city clerk for 23 years.
Marilyn married Carl Hokel on July 10, 1954 in Goldfield. She was a dedicated member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church. She was an avid quilter, enjoyed traveling and her membership in the Canasta Club.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Hokel of Huxley; four children, Dennis (Joellyn) Hokel and their children, Megan and Christopher of Huxley/Slater; Mark (Patty) Hokel and their children, Katie and Ben of Slater; David (Brenda) Hokel of Polk City and their children, Danalee (Brian) Brehman of Las Vegas and Ethan Hokel of Ames; Deanne (Mike) Hutton and their children, Casey, Hannah and Grace, all of Tulsa, OK; one brother, Norman (Barb) Gangstead of Goldfield; one sister, Arlene Northrup of Stanhope; sisters-in-law, Bev Gangstead of Dakota City, Betty Snider and Marilyn (Steve) Thomas, all of Ames, and Karen Wiles of West Des Moines; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Gangstead; brothers-in-law, Gene Northrup, Keith Snider, and Sonny Wiles; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Milani.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.
Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames assisted the family.
