Ruth Dowell Myers, a resident of Coral Gables, Florida, and daughter of a founding Nevada family, passed away May 13, 2009, at age 86. Raised in Crookston and St. Paul, Minnesota, she graduated from the University of Minnesota and later earned a master's degree from Florida International University. She was a school teacher who touched many young people's lives, and in retirement she continued to volunteer time advising high school students.

Ruth was active in many civic organizations in the Miami area and had the distinction of being elected in 2004 the first woman president of the Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables, at age 81. She also was a supporter of many Nevada institutions, including the library and SCORE facilities. Along with her sisters, she helped establish the Dyer-Dowell family home as an historical museum.

Her favorite activity in retirement was working with Larry Pohlman at Hertz Farm Management, supervising the Dowell family farm in Nevada. Although never a resident of Nevada, Ruth was a regular visitor throughout her lifetime and she greatly enjoyed her friendships and business relationships in the area.

Ruth is survived by her three devoted children, Dowell (Susan Tuemmler), Hannah (Arthur Chan), daughter Austin, and two grandsons, Ben and Jesse. She also is survived by her sisters Hannah Kellogg Dowell of Washington, D.C., and Margaret D. Gravatt, MD, of Portland, Oregon. She is predeceased by her parents, Austin Allyn Dowell and Isabel Dyer Dowell. Following her cremation, Ruth Dowell Myers will be laid to rest in the Dowell family plot in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
