Lavel Ray Abell, son of Ernest Ray Abell and Irene Mae Sevier Abell, was born June 17, 1929, in Creston and passed from this life Monday, April 20, 2009, at Clarke County Hospital at 79 years of age.

Lavel graduated from Murray High School in 1947 and later attended Reisch Auctioneer School in Mason City, receiving his certification in 1966.

Lavel was united in marriage to Carolyn Lee McKinney on Nov. 15, 1972, at Colo.

Over the years Lavel has been blessed with being able to make his life’s work from the two things he truly enjoyed, auctioneering and the raising, showing and selling of quarter horses.

Lavel farmed for many years south of Osceola until 1966 at which time he and his family moved to Sigourney and he operated Keoco Auction Company for 10 years. In 1976, Lavel and Carolyn returned to Murray where he owned and ran his Quarter Horse Ranch. During this time he also continued his gift of auctioneering at several South Central Iowa Sale barns as well as conducting private auctions for people in the area.

He was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and also a member of the Iowa Quarter Horse Association and Appaloosa and Paint Horse Associations. Lavel was a founding member of the Clarke County Sheriff’s Posse and became an honorary member when he moved from the county in 1966. He was very active with his family as a member of the Murray, Osceola, Sigourney and What Cheer Saddle Clubs. He was well known for leading many 4th of July parades in Osceola dressed in his Indian Costume. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and attending horse shows with his children.

Those preceding Lavel in death were his parents; sisters, Margaret (in infancy), Maxine Jones, Carol Perry and Wilma Vanderpluym; brother, Bill Abell; and father and mother in-law Victor and Virginia McKinney.

He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, Carolyn Abell of Murray; son, Dan Abell of Sigourney; daughter, Cathy (Dan) Tolly of Oskaloosa; daughter, Becky (Larry) Netten of Keota; son, Randy (Donna) Abell of Eagleville, Mo.; grandchildren, Dana Abell of Sigourney, Justin (Becky) Abell of Sigourney, Jerrid (Krista) Tolly of Indianola, Marshal (Nicole) Tolly of Norwalk, Steven (Tara) Tolly of Cedar Rapids, Wes (Angela) Snakenberg of Sigourney, Tyler Snakenberg of Sigourney, Tysen and Brody Abell of Eagleville; 11 great-grandchildren as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Kale Funeral Home, Thursday, April 23, 2009, with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating.

Interment followed in the Murray Cemetery.
