Darrell Dayton Starbuck, 81 of Ames, formerly of Nevada, died on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 20 at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada with Pastor Myron D. Herzberg officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Darrell was born on August 8, 1927 in Vernon Center, Minnesota to Charles William and Helen Ivadel (Dayton) Starbuck. His family moved to Iowa in 1929. He started his education at Milford Township School through sixth grade then attended Roland High School. In 1942, he moved to Nevada and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He came back and worked at the filling station which his father owned. On August 29, 1948, Darrell married Jean McAtee at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. To this union, 5 children were born. They celebrated 60 years together in 2008.

Darrell decided to change the filling station into a fast food restaurant, known as Starbuck's Drive In, which he owned for over 30 years. The restaurant is still operational today. He loved working with the younger kids.

Darrell volunteered for the Nevada Fire Department for 12 years, was a captain and an honorary fireman. He was also involved with the Lincoln Highway Day Committee, was a business man and Realtor. Darrell was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church and the William F. Ball American Legion Post in Nevada.

Darrell and Jean retired in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas and worked in a restaurant in Ouachita Stated Park. They came back to Iowa to be closer to family. They resided in Colo prior to moving to Ames.

Darrell had a great sense of humor, was always ready for a party, and loved a good time. But mostly, he loved his family whom he was very proud of.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Jean of Ames; daughter, Kathie (Phil) Kuhns of Nevada and their 2 daughters, Dena (Adam) Blazek and Heather (Toby) McCarter; son, Douglas (Helen) Starbuck of Nevada and their children, Tony, Megan and Charlie Starbuck; son, Bradley (Rhonda) Starbuck of Dallas, GA and their son Arlo (Teresa) Starbuck, and daughter, Linda Bishop of Osage Beach, MO and her daughter, Molly Bishop; 4 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Betty Daley of Ames and Joyce Stenson of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, a son Dayton Darrell Starbuck on January 20, 1997, and a brother Donald Starbuck.

A memorial fund has been established in Darrell's name.
