Fred Watne, 62, of Ames, died Saturday, May 16, 2009. A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 21, at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road, in Des Moines. Friends may call at 5:30 p.m.

Freddie J. Watne, 65, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, of melanoma at University Park in Des Moines. A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines, where family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Fred was born Oct. 13, 1943, served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Iowa Barber College, where he later became an instructor. He moved to Ames in 1973, where he barbered until a month ago.

He had a unique sense of humor, loved telling jokes, and enjoyed boxing, fishing, spending time with friends and his grandson.

He is survived by one son, Michael (Cindy), of Ankeny; one daughter, Bethany, of Urbandale; one grandson, Benjamin; and one sister, Vickie Roth, of Johnston.
