THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

Col. Harold E. Fischer, USAF Ret., 83, died Thursday, April 30, 2009.

He was born May 8, 1925, in Lone Rock, the son of Harold and Pearl (Frederickson) Fischer. He graduated from Burt High School in 1943, and attended Iowa State College for two years, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, before entering USAF Flight Training, becoming a fighter pilot in the Korean War. After downing 10 enemy aircraft, he was shot down, becoming a political prisoner of the People’s Republic of China for 2 1/2 years. Upon his release, he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at Iowa State University while flying for the Iowa Air National Guard. He later completed a tour of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. Among the many awards he received include the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Legion of Merit.

He is survived by one daughter, Dana L. Fischer, of Ames; three sons, Harold III, of San Antonio, Kurt, of Tivoli, N.Y., and Clint, of Ankeny; and five grandsons, Harold IV, Alex, Austin and Pascal Fischer, and Scott Keefe.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Katherine, and his father and mother.

Memorials may be sent to American Legion of Ames or NAMI of Central Iowa, Ames.
