THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
Neva Mae Barker, 78, of Nevada, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 10, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1110 11th St., in Nevada.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at Chet Ryan Funeral Home, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada, where a prayer service and rosary will be at 7 p.m.
Neva was born Nov. 2, 1930, in Des Moines, the daughter of William B. and Edna T. (Shaw) Squire. She grew up in Des Moines and attended Lincoln High School.
Neva and Howard R. (Pat) Barker were married Feb. 21, 1950, in Nevada. They settled on acreage south of Nevada and were blessed with four children, Mike, Steve, Linda and Danny.
She was employed by R.H. Donnelly in Nevada and 3M in Ames, where she retired in 1990. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, the Harley Owners Group, a charter member of the Route 65 HOG chapter, and a supporter of the Des Moines Race for the Cure. She enjoyed motorcycles, gardening and flowers, and was an avid NASCAR fan.
She was a loving mother and grandmother, and a special friend to all who knew her. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Mike (Barb) Barker, of Pilot Mound, Steve (Karen Creager) Barker, of Des Moines, Linda (Tom) Hackett, of St. James, Minn., and Danny Barker, of Maxwell; two sisters, Thelma (Ken) Way, of Madison, Ala., and Lillis Lewis, of Gatesville, Texas; one brother, Butch (Carol) Dennis, of Norwalk; and grandchildren, Mandy Barker, Ryan (Lauren) Barker and Tommy Hackett. She is also survived by numerous extended family members including very special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Clarence Dennis, of Des Moines; and her husband, Howard Barker on Sept. 23, 1991.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
