THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 24, 2009.

Wayne E. Tyler, 96, of Ames, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Green Hills Care Center. A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Adams Funeral Chapel in Ames, with visitation starting at 4 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 25, at the Afton Cemetery.

Wayne was born Oct. 15, 1912, in Union County, to Gertrude Davis and Burton Tyler, and grew up on the family farm in Afton. He graduated from Creston High School and Iowa State College with a degree in animal science.

While a student at Iowa State College, he was a member of the Livestock Judging Team and the Dairy Cattle Judging Team, a member of the Men’s Glee Club and an active member in the Block and Bridle Club. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho agricultural fraternity, and, as an alumnus, continued to participate actively in all of the projects of the Alpha Gamma Rho. Among other honors, he received the Alumni Achievement Award, the 50-year Testimonial Award, the Order of Omega Outstanding Alumni Award and The Order of the Crescent.

After graduation, he was employed by ISU Extension service, Iowa Farm Bureau and finally the American Farm Bureau, where he was director of marketing. After retirement, he worked for a time for the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons as a consultant in organization and legislative activities.

He was an Ames resident since 1977. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Ames Noon Rotary Club, Ames Golf and Country Club and Ames Collegiate Presbyterian Church.

In September 1938, he married Kathryn Gerhart, of Newton, and they had two children, one son, Richard B. Tyler, and one daughter, Jane Anne Tyler, who died in infancy.

He is survived by his son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Flora Tyler; and granddaughter, Katy (Jeff) and their children, Ben and Kelly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; one sister; his wife, Kathryn; and their daughter, Janie.

Memorials may be made to Homeward Hospice or Emergency Residence.
