Marion E. Smith, 84, of Nevada, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Marion was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Collins, the son of Orrin and Sarah (Gilley) Smith. He graduated from Collins High School in 1942. Marion served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Dawson on Jan. 29, 1954, at the EUB parsonage in Zearing.
Marion worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation as a draftsman in the soil design department, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Nevada, and the American Legion, William F. Ball Post No. 48. Marion loved his family and granddaughters. He enjoyed animals, fishing, working with numbers, spending time with family and friends, and feeding his pet squirrels that came to visit every day.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Nevada; a daughter, Terry Seibert, of Story City; two granddaughters, Shannon and Kristie; and two sisters, Gertrude Hunt, of Nevada, and Gloria Carpenter, of Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parent; seven brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Interment will be in the Colo Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and to the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
