Train Hits A. Walatka; Des Moines Man Dies In Crash

Death stalked the highways in and near Ames Sunday with a viciousness and thoroness never before equaled in the history of the city, leaving three dead and one critically injured within a period of 16 hours, and bringing the total weekend fatalities to four dead and two injured.

Four separate accidents in and near the city resulted in in four deaths, two being pedestrians, one in a car and the other on a motorcycle.

Those who died Sunday are:

Eurban Krantz, 19, of Harlan, died 5 a. m.

August Walatka, 56, of Ames, died about noon.

Roger Hansen, 24, of Des Moines, died at 9 p. m.

Miss Elinor Wakefield of Sioux City was critically injured in the accident in which Hansen was killed.

The fourth accident victim over the weekend was Roger Hansen, 24, of Des Moines, who died at the Mary Greeley hospital at 9 p. m., Sunday less than an hour after the car in which he had been driving went into a ditch two miles east of Ames. His neck was broken.

Loses Control

Hansen, with Evelyn Bergstrom of Davenport, Elinor Wakefield of Story City and Robert Fay of Nevada, the latter three students at Iowa State college, were returning to Ames when Hansen lost control of the car as he attempted to pass a truck. The car rolled over several times in the ditch.

Miss Wakefield was taken to the hospital where she is suffering from a fractured pelvic bone and numerous bruises. The possibility of internal injuries had not been fully determined at 11 a. m. Monday. The others were uninjured.

Hansen was graduated from Grinnell college last year and had been employed in a Des Moines bank. He is survived by his father, C. C. Hansen of Des Moines.

Hansen's body was taken to the Hamilton Funeral home in Des Moines late Sunday night.
