Train Hits A. Walatka; Des Moines Man Dies In Crash

Death stalked the highways in and near Ames Sunday with a viciousness and thoroness never before equaled in the history of the city, leaving three dead and one critically injured within a period of 16 hours, and bringing the total weekend fatalities to four dead and two injured.

Four separate accidents in and near the city resulted in in four deaths, two being pedestrians, one in a car and the other on a motorcycle.

Those who died Sunday are:

Eurban Krantz, 19, of Harlan, died 5 a. m.

August Walatka, 56, of Ames, died about noon.

Roger Hansen, 24, of Des Moines, died at 9 p. m.

Miss Elinor Wakefield of Sioux City was critically injured in the accident in which Hansen was killed.

Hails Car

Krantz was fatally injured shortly after midnight on Lincoln way west of Hazel avenue when he attempted to hail a car driven by Jesse Nelson, 116 Campus avenue. Krants and Orville Matthew of Paullina, both members of the CCC camp at the west edge of Ames, were reported walking on the highway. Krantz stepped out in front of the Nelson car to thumb a ride, Nelson reported.

Nelson, who was going west, was unable to turn out because of another car traveling esast and ??? ??? Krantz with the right ??? fender of his car. Krantz was rushed to the Mary Greeley hospital where he died five hours later of a fractured skull.

Walking on Tracks

Short services were held at the CCC camp here at 10:30 a. m. Monday, after which the body was taken to Harlan for final services and burial. Krantz had been at the camp here for seven months.
