R. V. Jones Is Killed on Mo. Farm Tuesday

Word was received here at 3 p. m. that R. V. Jones, 608 Grand avenue, was shot and killed about 11 a. m. Tuesday by Cliff Simmons when he attempted to foreclose on a farm occupied by Simmons, former Ames resident, near Mountain Grove, Mo.

According to information learned here, Jones left for Mountain Grove Sunday. He had sold a farm near there to Simmons and it was understood, was planning foreclosure action because Simmons had failed to meet payments due on the purchase of the farm.

When Jones visited Simmons at the farm Tuesday morning, Simmons shot Jones. Jones was a former railroad engineer on the Chicago & North Western railroad. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Jeanette; two sons, Richard and Robert, and stepson and stepdaughter, both residing in Boone.

Former Ames Man Is Held For Shooting

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Mo. (UP)- Clifford Simmons, Mountain View farmer, Wednesday was charged with first degree murder for the fatal shooting Tuesday of R. V. Jones of Ames, Ia.

Coroner Paige Robertson of West Plains, here to investigate the shooting, ordered an inquest which had been scheduled for Wednesday delayed until Thursday. Meanwhile a date for Simmons' preliminary hearing on the murder charge had not been set.

Funeral services for R. V. Jones, 66, of 608 Grand avenue, will be held at 2:30 p. m. Thursday from the Masonic temple at Boone, with the Rev. Frank Bean, pastor of the First Methodist church at Boone, in charge. Following the funeral the body will lie in state at the Schroeder chapel, until late Thursday evening. The body will be shipped Friday to Stockton, Ill., for burial.

Masonic organizations also will take part in the funeral services.

Mr. Jones was shot and killed Tuesday morning by Cliff Simmons, a former Ames resident, at Mountain View, Mo. Jones had left Ames Sunday night to make arrangements about foreclosing a mortgage which he held on the farm occupied by Simmons, and when the two met at Mountain View, it was reported, Simmons shot Jones.

Jones was born in Woodbine. Ill., Feb 10, 1869. He started work with the Chicago and North Western railroad at Clinton when 21, and served with the railroad for 43 years. The family lived at Boone for many years, Jones serving as engineer on trains between Boone and Omaha.

The family moved to Ames in 1930. Jones was a member of the Shrine at Sioux City and several of the Masonic lodges at Boone.

Surviving him are his wife, three sons, Richard and Robert, of Ames, and Forrest of Boone; two daughters, Jeanette, at home, and Mrs. Ed Schroeder, at Boone; three brothers Hugh, Fred and John, of Woodbine, and one sister, Fannie, of Woodbine.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Mo. (UP) An inquest was being conducted here Wednesday into the circumstances of the gun-shot death of R. V. Jones of Ames, 66-year-old railway and business man.

Jones was shot down in a store here Tuesday by Cliff Simmons, Mountain View farmer who is held in the jail here pending filing of charges.

The shooting it was disclosed, was the outgrowth of an argument between Jones and Simmons over a mortgage foreclosure.

Jones had come to Mountain View to sell a farm from which he was said to have had Simmons evicted after foreclosure of a mortgage.

Mrs. Evelyn Benton, saleswoman in a store, said Jones and Simmons met in the store and began arguing. She said Simmons jerked a pistol from his pocket and she ran outside for help.

Mrs. Benton said she heard three shots. Jones had been shot thru the head and leg and lay dying when help arrived. Simmons was shot thru the left hand. Simmons had been working for a relierf agency and has a family.
