THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, March 6, 2009.

Clifford R. Birkestrand, 87, of Huxley, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, with Pastor Tim Maybee officiating. Burial will be at Fjeldberg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.

Clifford R. Birkestrand was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Cambridge, to Albert (A.J.) and Anna Margaret (Johnson) Birkestrand. He was baptized and confirmed at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, and graduated from White Oak school in 1939. On June 6, 1942, he married Maxine H. Mitchell at the Fjeldberg Parsonage.

Clifford was a farmer and worked at the Alleman Co-op for 23 years, retiring in 1983. He was on the Cambridge School Board, church council and drove the school bus. He enjoyed playing basketball and made All-County in 1937.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Joyce), of Huxley, and Gary (Wanda), of Slater; one sister, JoAnn Gregg; three grandchildren, Steve Birkestrand, Heather Norris and Heidi Ihle; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, in 2004; brothers, John and Arnold; and sister, Stella Carley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
