Mike Abbe, 61, lost his fight with cancer and went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by his loving family. As per his wishes, Mike's body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22 at Westover Funeral Home.

Mike was born June 5, 1947 in Waterloo, the son of Virgil and Verona (Nelson) Abbe, where he grew up in the restaurant business. He lived most of his life in Iowa. Mike loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed his dogs, hunting and fishing. Mike was a dedicated and loyal member of Elks Lodge #2752 where he held several offices. He was also a District Deputy with the Elks.

Mike is survived by his wife, Toni; children, Scot Abbe of Des Moines, Susan Abbe and Stephen (Deborah) Abbe of Orlando, Florida and April (Mark) Heintz of Nevada; grandchildren, Celeste Lapen, Jessie and Jaeden Heintz and Austin Abbe; great grandchild, Jordan Lapen and his granddogs, Martini and Buddy Abbe.

A memorial gathering with the family present was held Wednesday at Westover Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mike may be made to the American Cancer Society.
