THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, November 28, 2008.

Avie Baer, 88, of Ames and formerly of Waukee, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Waukee United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Waukee United Methodist Church.

Avalon Virginia Seiberling was born in Mitchellville, the daughter of John and Frances Seiberling. Seeking a good farm and the best school, her father moved the family to Tipton. She graduated from Tipton High School and Tipton Junior College and was certified as a teacher at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Avalon married Lewis A. Baer on Oct. 8, 1943.

Lewie and Avie taught school in Keota before establishing their home in Waukee. After the births of their daughters, Carol and Janet, Avalon dedicated her life to her family, home and church, and did all the bookkeeping for her husband's business. Sounds of the adding machine and smells of angel food cake or butterhorn rolls drifted throughout the house late at night. She served her family and friends with grace and love and would be baking rolls this day, in thanks, for all of you, if she could.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Bob) Wolfe, of Fort Dodge, and Janet (Rich) Toering, of Ames; grandchildren, John, Elizabeth and Ryan; and one great-grandson, Mason.

Avie was preceded in death by her husband, Lewie, and her sister, Arlene. Memorial contributions may be made to the Waukee United Methodist Church.
