DEATHS IN STORY COUNTY

CIVIL WAR VET ANSWERS TAPS

Royal P. Sheffield, 89, sole surviving veteran of the Civil war in Story City, died at the Story City hospital Thursday.
The veteran had been at the hospital for about four weeks, following an accident in which he was struck down and a truck run over one of his legs breaking the bone below the knee.
Mr. Sheffield had apparently been getting along very nicely for one of his advanced years, until Thursday morning when he suddenly began to weaken, his heart failed him and he passed away about 1:00.
Royal P. Sheffield was one of the real pioneer citizens of this part of the county having been one of the early settlers down in southwest corner of Howard township, coming here with his parents in the early fifties and settling on a farm which he still owned at the time of his death.
Few men there were in Story county when Mr. Sheffield arrived here first as a boy.
He leaves four children. They are Clinton, the youngest son with whom he had been making his home on the old homestead south east of here; Frank, who lives in Story City, Mrs. George Wiggins of Story City, and the daughter Stella Sherk, whose home is in Colorado.
Mrs. Sheffield, whose maiden name was Menilva Squires, died about 12 years ago. Three of the children who died after having reached manhood or womanhood, were Scott and Roy Sheffield, sons, and Nettie a daughter.

--clipping is not dated nor identified as to publisher though probably the Story City Herald. Royal P. Sheffield died on Jan. 7, 1932.
