Harold R. Godown, 90, of Ames, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will follow at West Linn Cemetery in Linden.
Harold was born June 12, 1918, in Linden. On June 9, 1941, he married Mae Belle Longino, whom he met at Iowa State University. They had been married 63 years when she passed away in 2005.
Harold graduated from Iowa State University in 1941 with a degree in animal husbandry. During World War II, he served his country by working on his father's farm. Later, since jobs in his career field were scarce, he worked for a time at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge. He began his career with the Soil Conservation Service as a district conservationist in Ida Grove and moved to Webster City in 1959, where he continued to work with SCS until 1969. He began work for the Story County Soil Conservation Service in Nevada in 1969. He and Mae Belle moved to Ames in 1970. He retired from SCS in 1978, and for a brief period of time enjoyed assembling mopeds for Ames Cycles. He had resided in Ames for 38 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Croft, of Overland Park, Kan., her husband, Terry, son, Doug, of Orlando, Fla., grandchildren, Tony and Jerry, of Overland Park, Kan., Jon, of Orlando, Fla., and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa, also of Orlando, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Belle, and a son, Don.
