GRANT BARKER DIES SUDDENLY AT 67
CONTRACTOR WAS AMES RESIDENT FOR 44 YEARS
Last Rites Sunday At The Baptist ChurchGrant Barker, 67, resident of Ames for the past 44 years, died suddenly Thursday evening at his home, 305 East Third street, after an illness of two days.
Mr. Barker, for many years a well known painting contractor and interior decorator, had retired from active business the past few years because of failing health. Death was caused by heart disease, with which he had been a sufferer for the past two years.
Born in Canton, Ill., Mr. Barker came to Ames in 1892. He ws united in marriage to Gertrude Yelton in 1894 and six children were born to the couple. Two children preceded Mr. Barker in death.
Mr. Barker was an active member of the First Baptist church, where he served as deacon and usher.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the First Baptist church. The Rev. J. Harold Gamble pastor of the church and the Rev. Ernest Shaffer pastor of the United Brethren church will officiate. Burial will be in the Ames cemetery.
Surviving are his widow and four daughters, Mrs. Vera Krall of Chicago, Mrs. Irma Rosenberger of Iowa City, Mrs. Ethyl Menten and Miss Harriet Barker of Ames. Two brothers, Burl of Maxwell and Charles of Clarinda, and three grandchildren also survive.---from the Ames Daily Tribune 8/14/1936
Arthur Otis Barker and Ernest Eugene Barker are the sons of Mr. Grant Barker that preceded him. While Mr. Barker is at the Ames cemetery, his sons are with their grandparents, James and Susan Yelton, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Milford Twp., Story County, IA.
