College Professor Dies Suddenly Tuesday

Funeral services for Ernest A. Pattengill, 55, associate professor of mathematics at Iowa State college, who died suddenly Monday, night at his home, 1219 Orchard drive, will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Congregational church here. The Rev. H. K. Hawley, pastor of the church, will be in charge. Burial will be at Osage, Mr. Pattengill's old home, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Professor Pattengill suffered a serious heart attack two weeks ago and his condition remained critical until last week when he seemed to be recovering. He was eating supper last night when stricken again and died in a few minutes before a doctor could arrive.

Receiving his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State college in 1897, Mr. Pattengill went to Cornell university where he was graduated in 1899. Since 1900 he was a member of the Iowa State college mathematics faculty. He was made associate professor in 1914. Mr. Pattengill was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity, American Mathematics society Pi Mu Epsilon honorary mathematics fraternity: Sons of the American Revolution and the Congregational church. Thruout his long period of service at the college, Professor Pattengill was on of the most popular instructors. Alumni, who had been students in his classes, always made it a point to stop and see "Pat" when on the campus for a visit.

Mr. Pattengill was born March 6, 1874. On July 29, 1913 he was married to Miss Emma Wenholz also an Iowa State graduate, at Dundee, Ill.

Besides his wife he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Martha Pattengill of Osage, and his daughter Louise, who is in the tenth grade, Ames high school.

300 ATTEND FUNERAL FOR E. A. PATTENGILL

Approximately 300 persons attended the funeral services held Wednesday mornimg at 9 o'clock at the Congregational church for Prof. E. A. Pattengill, 55, who died Monday evening at his home, 1219 Orchard Drive. Short services were held from the home at 8:30 a. m.

During the services at the church. Mrs. Grant Dudgeon and Mrs. H. L. Young sang a duet, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. H. G. Buck, and the men's quartet, composed of A. H. Pickford, M. G. Spangler, Donald. Bliss and Ray Cunningham sang a selection. Pallbearers were R. E. Nichol, L. R. French of Des Moines, Prof. L. B. 3pinney, W. P. Nichols, Truman Manning and E. R. Smith. The Rev. L. K. Hawley was in charge of the services.

Among those in attendance were Miss Caroline Steinwart of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Prince of Webster City, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. French of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hager and daughter Marcia and Mrs. Louise Wenholz of Dundee, Ill.

The body was taken to Osage where short services and burial were held Wednesday afternoon. Accompanying the body were Mrs. Pattengill and daughter Louise, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Stepoensou, Mr. and Mrs. Truman Manning, Prof. J. V. McKelvey, Miss Maria Roberts, Dr. H. K. Hawley, Dr. J. F. Turner, all of Ames, Mrs. Martha Pattengill, Prof. Pattengill's mother; and Miss Steinwart.
