Susan Metzler succumbed to cancer on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, two days short of her 57th birthday. Susan will be missed by her mother, father and brothers, Tom, Mark, Michael and Daniel, as well as by her many friends.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Santa Cruz Community Church, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz, CA, 95062.

Born Aug. 16, 1951, to Elizabeth and David Metzler in Austin, Texas, Susan moved to Ames at age 2. She later attended high school at Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, and then went on to Fresno State College and the University of California Davis, where she earned a master's degree in Slavic languages. Living in the Santa Cruz, Calif., area for the last 23 years, she worked as a medical transcriptionist and was involved in both church and musical activities.

She played viola with the Fresno State College Orchestra and loved playing chamber music with her many musician friends. She enjoyed studying languages, including Hindi and Spanish, and was especially proficient in Russian language, which she used to help the Russian immigrant community in Sacramento.
