Shirley B. Miller, 77, of Dayton, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital. A celebration of Shirley's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Rev. Keith Putney will officiate. Shirley has donated her body to the Des Moines University Hospital. Interment of her cremains will be at a later date in the Dayton Cemetery.
Shirley was born Dec. 23, 1930, in Aurelia, the daughter of Bert C. and Elvina (Dieterich) Nielsen. She grew up there and graduated with the Aurelia High School class of 1948.
She married Bud Miller in 1950 in Aurelia. Bud and Shirley moved to Dayton in 1956, where they owned and operated the Starline Roller Rink. After they sold the rink, she was hired as the Dayton City Clerk and served in that position for 25 years.
Shirley enjoyed traveling and being on the golf course. She was the first woman ever elected to the golf board.
Shirley and Bud were blessed with one son, Michael, and his wife, Julie; three daughters, Leatha and her husband, Ron Henderson, Cara, and Jan; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her husband, Bud; and her only sister, Maxine, of Plano, Texas.
Preceding her in death were her two brothers, Robert Lyle and Dale and his wife, Shirley Jean.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
Carson–Stapp Funeral Home of Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
