AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, August 15, 2008.

Velma Marie Hess, 92, of Colo, died Thursday, Aug. 14, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the funeral home.

Velma was born July 23, 1916, in Colo, to Henry W. and Bessie A. (Dolph) Granger. She graduated from Colo High School in 1934 and Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. She married Morton B. Hess Oct. 25, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She enjoyed fishing, reading, playing dominos, solving crossword puzzles and word finds.

She is survived by one brother, Thomas Ray (Berdina) Granger, of Colo, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mort, on March 7, 2000; one daughter, Jane, in 1967; two brothers, Forrest, on March 3, 1991, and Donald, on March 26, 1998; and one sister, Lois Granger.

A memorial fund has been established in Velma's name.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
