Arlan and family moved to Ames in 1955 where he was employed by the U.S. Hog Cholera Station, the forerunner of the National Animal Disease Center. Outside of a two year trip to Lahore, Pakistan, to work with the U.N.'s World Health Organization, Ames was home to the McClurkin family until Arlan and Betty retired to Denver, Colo., in 2000.

Arlan was a charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. In 2002, he was honored with an award in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the field of veterinary medicine.

Arlan is survived his wife, Betty; his four children, John, Michael, David and Deeya; four grandchildren, Joel, Jason, Jennifer and Elizabeth; and four great-grandchildren, Ariana, Kelsea, Logan and Shealyn.
