William Stark Atwood, of Collins, died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 21.

He was born Nov. 19, 1925 in the countryside outside of Collins to Floyd Milford and Ila May (Crabb) Atwood of Collins. He graduated from Collins High School in Collins where he was the valedictorian of his graduating class of 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, was the first in the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill., then Bremerton, Wash. for two years. After the Navy, he started farming with his father and continues to farm until his death. He was the full-time rural mail carrier out of Collins and carried the mail for many years. He was an active member of the Iowa and National Rural Letter Carrier's Associations. He retired in 1988 with 40 years of service. His son, Doug, was his sub and later took over the mail route. He married Karol Lorraine Robinson on Dec. 15, 1946 at the Collins Methodist Church. They were happily married for 57 years. He was a member of the Collins United Methodist Church and also worked in the Maxwell food pantry for years. He became a Mason at Collins in 1947, also joined the Order of the Eastern Star at Collins in 1948 and later joined the Isabelle Chapter of the Eastern Star #271 at Colo. He was a 50-year member of the Fervent Masonic Lodge #153 AM & FM and was also a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He also joined the Freland Carver #81 American Legion Post in Collins in 1951.

He is survived by his wife, Karol Lorraine Atwood of rural Collins; one daughter, Christine (and Marvin) Huntrods of Collins; one son, Douglas (and Beth) Atwood of Collins; two sisters, Linda Lein of Cedar Falls, and Carol (Glenn) Head of Madison, N.J. Grandchildren are Joel and Tara Huntrods, Jill Huntrods, Clint Huntrods, Shelley Atwood, and Justin Atwood.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; a stepfather; and a brother, Eugene Atwood.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the United Methodist Church in Collins. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery outside of Collins.
