THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, June 28, 2008.

James Peter Shields, 56, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 22, surrounded by his loving family, after a decade long struggle with Multiple Systems Atrophy. A memorial mass will take place at a later date in Denver, Colo.

Jim was born April 20, 1952, to Madelyn Nalty Shields and Thomas Bernard Shields. He grew up in Denver, Colo., and attended Mullen Catholic High School and was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He enjoyed karate, classic TV, and was an avid Broncos fan. Mostly, he enjoyed spending time with his grand-nephew and grand-niece. He was a loving and devoted son and a wonderful brother, brother-in-law and uncle.

He is survived by his mother, Madelyn Nalty Shields; brothers, Thomas Gerard Shields and John "Pat" (Susan) Shields; nephew, Patrick Shields; niece, Sabrina (Nathan) Shields-Cook; grand-nephew, Alexander Shields-Cook; and grand-niece, Madelyn Shields-Cook.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Bernard Shields; and his brother, Michael Kevin Shields.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Israel Hospice House of Ames, 400 South Dakota Ave., Ames, Iowa 50014.
