THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, June 26, 2008.
Betty Jean Bourlet, 80, of Boone and a resident of Eastern Star Masonic Home of Boone since 2001, passed away Tuesday, June 24, at Boone County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Central Christian Church in Boone, with the Rev. Paul Fraser and the Rev. Jerry Evelsizer officiating. Burial will be in Bass Point Cemetery, northwest of Boone.
Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Walter-Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth and Story streets in Boone. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
Betty was born March 30, 1928, in Boone, the daughter of Jacob T. and Goldie E. (Russell) Shafer. In 1946, she graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle, Wash., and then later attended Commercial Business College in Seattle for three years, majoring in shorthand, typing and stenography.
She married James Rudolph Bourlet in Seattle, Wash. In 1960, the couple moved to Boone from Tacoma, Wash. She was a homemaker and also worked at Lawson's Grocery and then Randall's Grocery as a cashier. She then worked with the Iowa State University Library for 28 years. She retired in 1991.
She was a member of Central Christian Church of Boone. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling and especially her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Sally Anne Swanson and husband, John, of Geneseo, Ill., and Susan Kay Schmidt and husband, Joseph, of St. Peters, Mo.; five grandchildren, Matthew and Joshua Swanson, of Geneseo, Ill., and Ryan, Rebekah and Reagan Schmidt, of St. Peters, Mo.; one brother, Arlen D. Shafer and wife, Judy, of Boone; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Bourlet, of Timpson, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son, Russell.
Memorials may be given to Central Christian Church of Boone.
Walter-Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth and Story streets in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
