Loyd Charles Hughes, 59, of Ames, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at his rural Ames home of gastric cancer.
Hughes was born Jan. 18, 1939, at Mary Greeley Medical center in Ames to Rexford and Edna (Godfrey) Hughes. He was a 1956 Milford Township Consolidated School graduate and a life-long Milford Township resident. He married Loretta Hoberland on July 18, 1964, in Zearing. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a farmer, a Milford Township trustee, a member of the Iowa Tractor Pullers Association and Mid America Dwarf Car Racing Association. Hughes enjoyed tractor pulling, golfing, fishing, dwarf car racing and motorcycles.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Teri Lynn Hughes of Nevada; a brother, Dale Hughes of Nevada; three sisters, Norene Hughes of Austin, Texas, Linda Meyers of Littleton, Colo., and Karen Witzleben of Durham, N.C.; and 18 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1957; his mother on April 26, 1988; a son Rexford Lowell on Nov. 2, 1985; and a brother, Norman Rexford Hughes on April 24, 1944.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove cemetery in Milford Township, Story County.
A memorial fund has been established.
