Kenneth Charles Hughes, the son of Charles R. and Minnie C. Hughes, was born October 16th, 1912 on a farm near Kelley, Iowa. He passed away March 22, 1978 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
While he was a small boy his parents moved to the Madrid and Luther communities and there he grew to manhood. He was a graduate of the Luther Consolidated School and a member of the Luther Methodist Church. The family moved to Story County in 1936.
During WW II he served his country in the Pacific theater. While in training he met and married Mabel Morrison of Mill City, Oregon. After the war he returned with his wife to the farm where he lived until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rexford.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Mable; his son, Charles and his wife, Donna of Story City, a daughter, Margaret and her husband, Robert Moss of Ft. Dodge; a son Arthur, and his wife Patricia of Indianapolis, Ind,; a daughter, Mary and her husband Ray Meyers of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mr. Pat Nolan of Story City and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rexford Hughes of Nevada.
He was never too busy for his children and will be remembered as a kind and loving husband and father.
Funeral services were held in the Pleasant Grove Church, three miles east of Gilbert, Iowa on Saturday, March 25, 1978 at 1 p.m. The Rev Olaf Holen was in charge. Mrs. Gene Roberts, organist, provided the music. The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Burial was at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The American Legion Post #307 of Roland, Iowa was in charge of the military services at the graveside. Pallbearers were: Don Henderson, Oliver Lyle, Albert Anderson, Lester Peterson, Lloyd Ritland and Fritz Vogtlin.---from the Story City Herald Mar. 29, 1978
