Frances Evelyn Hines, 87, of Ames and formerly of Nevada, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, May 28. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 2, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1110 11th St., in Nevada, with Father John Herzog officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with a vigil service at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 1, at Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.
Frances Evelyn Hines was born June 14, 1920, in Graettinger, to Martin and Margaret (Redman) Aylward, the youngest of four girls. She graduated from Graettinger High School in 1937 and Capital City Business College in Des Moines. She began working for the city of Nevada in 1946.
She married Jerry Hines, of Nevada, and to that union were born five children, Kent (Kay) Hines, of Johnston, Annette Forbes, of Ames, Mary (Jan) Sherwood, of Savanna, Ga., Neal (Colleen) Hines, of Ames, and Mark (Emma) Hines, of Des Moines.
She worked for the city of Nevada for more than 40 years. She was deputy city clerk for many of those years and then was called back after her initial retirement. During her final years with the city, she worked for the Parks and Recreation Department at Gates Hall until the age of 80.
In earlier years, she enjoyed volunteering for the Story County Democrats, the American Legion and St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Anne's Study Club and a member of the church for more than 60 years. She also was a member of Watanee Club and her bridge club.
She is survived by her children; 13 grandchildren, Lana (Trey) Strong, Eric Hines, Diana Forbes, Andy Forbes, Amy (Tom) Mahoney, Jeff Hobbs, Jonathan Sherwood, Sarah (Troy) Lancaster, Laura (Todd) Bickmeyer, Brian Hines, and Mason, Luke and Jacob Hines; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jara, Lauren and Logan Strong, Nickolas Hines, Tyler, Molly and Leo Mahoney, Jalen and Kaley Lancaster, and Connor Hines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dorothy Aylward, of Graettinger, Veronica Gardea, of California, and Gladys Moffitt, of Estherville; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Mahoney, of Rochester, N.Y.; and one son-in-law, Daniel Forbes.
Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
