Eva Speier, 88, died Monday, May 26, at the Green Hills Retirement Community. An informal Minyan of Remembrance will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Green Hills common room in Ames. Burial will be in Mount Lebanon Cemetery (Wyuka) in Lincoln, Neb.

Eva Speier was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Halberstadt, Sachsen-Anwalt, Germany, to Alfred Speier and Käte Blüth Speier. She escaped Nazi Germany with her parents in December 1936 and settled in Lincoln, Neb.

She graduated from Teachers High School in 1937 and completed her degree in pharmacy at the University of Nebraska in 1941. She worked as a pharmacist at Gold's Department Store (later Brandeis) until the late 1970s.

She was an active member of the Great Books discussion group, and after retirement, volunteered in the purchasing records department at Lincoln General Hospital. She was a life member of Temple B'nai Jeshurun in Lincoln, Neb.

She moved to Ames in 1996, was a member of the Ames Jewish Congregation and the Iowa Jewish Historical Society.

She is survived by her niece, Hanna Rosenberg Gradwohl, and her husband, David, of Ames; one nephew, John Rosenberg, and his wife, Anke Boudreau, of Madison, Wis.; one grandnephew; two grandnieces; five great-grandnieces, and one great-grandnephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ilse Speier Rosenberg.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Iowa Jewish Historical Society, 910 Polk Blvd., Des Moines, IA, 50312, or charity of donor's choice.

Adams Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
