Virginia Harding-Roth, 87, formerly of Ames, died Sunday, May 18, at St. Luke's Hospital in Lee's Summit, Mo. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames. Burial will be in Iowa State University Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
Virginia Harding-Roth was born April 5, 1921, in Rockwell City, to L.B. and Bertha Harding. She was a graduate of Rockwell City High School. She was a graduate of Iowa State University, a sister of Delta Zeta sorority, earning a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1943, and returned to ISU for a master's degree in journalism in 1967. Throughout her career, she was a journalist in New York, worked for a newspaper in Creston, was a home economist for the Extension department in several Iowa counties and retired from the Iowa State University Extension Service. She was the editor for newsletters at her church and Green Hills Community.
She married Fred Roth June 24, 1972. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, PEO, DAR and NARFE. She was one of the founders of Green Hills Retirement Community and served on the board of directors of ISU Memorial Union from 1988 to 1992.
She is survived by one son, Kerby (Shelley) Harding, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; one stepson, Dr. Mitchell (Dorothy) Roth, of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Kirk (Jennifer) Harding, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Katheryn Carter, of Raytown, Mo., Kristen Moore, of Lansing, Kan., and Aurora Roth, of Fairbanks, Alaska; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anita Walters, of Humboldt.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred; her parents; two brothers, Lewis and Wilber Harding; and two sisters, Helen Stephens and Ruth Cooper.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
