THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, May 1, 2008.

June 21, 1940-April 29, 2008

Gary W. Moore, 67, a lifelong Ames resident, died Tuesday, April 29, at his home in Ames, after suffering from several health problems in the last few years. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, with a 1:30 p.m. service Saturday, May 3, at First Assembly of God in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Gary is survived by his wife, Sharon; one sister, Norma (Roger) Schupp, of Delaware, Ohio; three daughters, Barbara (Daryl) Schlapia, of Raytown, Mo., Deborah (Shawn) McIntyre, of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Lisa (Jeffrey) Wiese, of Hinton; three sons, Kurtis (Tonia), of Boone, Kevin, of Ames, and Marcus (Rebecca), of Beaumont Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gary was born June 21, 1940, in Ames, to Craig and Helen Moore. After graduating from Ames High, he worked at Bourns Electronics. He was the head inspector of incoming electrical components and parts for three years. During this time, he learned the value of quality workmanship and that remained with him for the rest of his life.

After leaving Bourns, he worked at Carter Press. There, he did negative layout work and operated the largest offset printing press in Ames. While working there, he was exposed to many graphics and type styles, which later influenced his photography and artistic life.

In 1963, he started work at the city of Ames Power Plant. He retired from there in 1997 after 34 years of service.

Over the years, he held several positions of honor in several organizations. These include serving on the board of directors of the Iowa Horticulture Society and the Ames Utility Retirement System.

His interest in flowers and especially roses led him to successfully exhibit roses in many Midwest rose shows. He was chosen to serve as a consulting rosarian for the American Rose Society.

He enjoyed photography for most of his life. Many of his photos have been published in various publications. He also served as the "unofficial" city photographer for several years. He did many photos around Ames, including the dedication book pictures of the new Water Pollution Control Plant and the transformation of Ames High School into the "new" City Hall.

After he retired, he began helping others to learn the Internet, Microsoft Office and, most of all, Internet graphics.

In keeping with the family's wishes, gifts and donations to the Ames Historical Society will be appreciated.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.
