John Conley, 86, of Ames, died Friday, April 18, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada.

Funeral services are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

John F. Conley, of Ames, passed away at Story County Long Term Care on Friday, April 18. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 22. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 21. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

John was born on Oct. 23, 1921, in Tyrone, to Owen and Margaret (Hynd) Conley. He attended schools in Tyrone and Georgetown. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served until October 1945. John was united in marriage to Dorothy Neale April 6, 1945. He was employed at Mathison Ford for 12 years. He owned and operated Conley Garage in Gilbert for 30 years. He drove a school bus for Gilbert for 39 years. John was a member of Westory Gilbert Fire Department for many years, serving as chief for 20 years. He and Dorothy were charter members of Triple G Dance Club and enjoyed many years of dancing there.

John loved dancing, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed a number of fishing trips with his sons. He and Dorothy also enjoyed many good times camping and fishing with family and friends. His favorite pastime after retiring was attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three sons, John E. Conley, Larry (Vernita, "Sunny") Conley and Mark Conley; two grandsons, Matt (Amy) Conley, and Cole Conley; three granddaughters, Amy (Todd) Thimesh, Wendy (Tony) Paulson, and Megan (Derek) Van Gundy; six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; four brothers, Pat of Ames, Owen, of Marshalltown, Tom, of Ottumwa, and Alex of Fergus Falls, Minn.; two sisters, Cathrine Lake, of Marshalltown, and Agnes O'Brien, of Albion; as well as two special family friends, Sharon Weigel and Jan Tibbett. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and one grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Israel Family Hospice House, St. Cecilia Building Fund or a charity of your choice.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
