Richard A. Hendrickson, 75, longtime Ames resident, died Monday, April 14, at home. Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard Allan Hendrickson, Professor Emeritus, died at his home on April 14, 2008. He was born on Feb. 1, 1933 in Omaha, Neb., to Clarence R. and Frances C. (Holquist) Hendrickson. He grew up in Omaha, graduating from Central High School in 1951. In high school, he was chosen Commander of Cadets of the Army Junior ROTC. As captain of the ROTC Rifle Team he led the team to honors in competition.
Richard entered Iowa State College in 1951 and majored in Physics. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity, and his other undergraduate memberships included Pi Mu Epsilon, Arnold Air Society, and Scabbard and Blade. He served as Wing Commander of the Iowa State Air Force ROTC and as Captain of the Air Force Rifle Team, leading the team to 1st place in the William Randolph Hurst Trophy Matches for ROTC units in 1954.
After graduation from Iowa State in 1955, he taught introductory Nuclear Physics through the Iowa State Engineering Extension Service.
He married Dorothy Isabel Van Cleve in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 10, 1956.
He served in the Air Defense Command of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 flying interceptor aircraft and attaining the rank of Captain and acquiring a life-long love of flying.
Returning to Iowa State University, Richard received his MS (1962) and Ph.D. (1966) from the College of Engineering. While a student, he was a graduate research assistant from 1960 to 1964 at the Ames Laboratory. He joined the faculty of the Nuclear Engineering Department in 1964 and taught radiation detection and reactor operations. He lectured and directed students in research in the areas of radiation detection and measurement and in nuclear reactor kinetics. In addition to teaching he held the positions of supervisor and manager of the UTR-10 research and teaching reactor.
He retired with disability in February 1992 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
His recent memberships include Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, the Marston Club, American Society of Engineering Education, American Nuclear Society, and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames.
Prior to his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1976, he was a member of the Ames Airmen Club, served as assistant scout leader for Troop 140, BSA, and was a member of boards of Beta Theta Pi and Collegiate Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed raising roses and, when that was no longer possible, he turned to orchid culture as a hobby. He was die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa State wrestling team.
Although he was confined to his bed for ten years, he maintained his sense of humor, interest in learning about music and nature, enjoyed visits from family and friends, and never failed to express his appreciation to all who cared for and about him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by: Dorothy Isabel, his wife of 52 years; his children Dr. Anne M. (Dr. S. Michael) Coleman of Ogden, Utah, and John R. (Kathy J.) Hendrickson of Ankeny, Iowa; and grandchildren James R. and Matthew A. Coleman and Karen M. and Wesley J. Hendrickson.
A family gathering of remembrance will be held at a later date. In accordance with Richard's wishes, no other services are planned. Burial of his cremains will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Contributions in Richard's memory may be sent to The Ames Emergency Residence Shelter in care of Vic Moss.
