Josephine Louise Brown Leffler, 91, died Tuesday, March 18, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Her ashes will be buried in Ames after a private family service. The family will hold a memorial reception from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in the Mansion at Wesley Acres, 3560 Grand Ave., in Des Moines.
Josephine Leffler was born May 9, 1916, to Harry Farwell Brown and Mary (Tilden) Brown, of Ames. She grew up in Ames, graduating from Ames High School in 1934. She graduated from Iowa State College in 1938, majoring in child development and attended Merrill-Palmer School in Detroit, during the winter term of her senior year. She was employed at The School of Domestic Arts and Science in Chicago from September 1938 until the following May.
She married Allan T. Leffler Sept. 1, 1939, and her life centered on her home and family. The family lived in Johnston from 1946 to 1968. As her children moved on to college, she returned to work at Plymouth Nursery School as its first teacher of the 3-year-old classroom. She was a devoted wife and mother to the couple's four children and their offspring, who appreciated the constant pleasure and pride she took in their lives. We will all miss her steadfast care, sense of humor, laugh, and wonderful smile.
She is survived by one brother, Farwell T. (Ruth) Brown, of Ames; her children, Harry (Nancy), of DeKalb, Ill., Tom (Judy Anderson), of Johnston, Mary (Ronald) Hilliard, of Des Moines, and daughter-in-law, Melissa Leffler, of Ellicott City, Md.; her grandchildren, Katherine (Paul) Brown, Christopher (Jessica) Leffler, Maggie (Tim) Martin, Dan (Megan) Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Suzanne (Ben) Nelson, George Leffler, John Leffler, Polly Anderson (Dan Gambino), Marty (Bonnie) Anderson, Aaron Hilliard and Whitney Hilliard; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan, and one son, Allan T. Leffler II.
