James Meldrem, 77, of Gilbert, died Wednesday, March 12. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

James Duane Meldrem, 77, of Gilbert, died Wednesday, March 12, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Gilbert Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Gilbert Cemetery.

James Duane Meldrem was born April 21, 1930, in Gilman, to Clifford Nathan James Meldrem and Evy Jane (Sanders) Meldrem. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951-53. He was a member of the Army Reserve and was the administrator of the Department of Army Reserve Office in Ames from 1956 to 1985.

He married Betty Jean Chentland Oct. 2, 1954. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2004. They lived in Gilbert most of their married life.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Meldrem, of Gilbert; three daughters, Joyce Meldrem, of Farley, Janice (Don) Uthe, of Ames, and Janell (Gene) Barker, of Fort Collins, Colo.; one son, Jim Meldrem, of Story City; four grandchildren, Scott (Jacque), Stacy, Stephanie and Kevin Uthe; one great-grandson, Ryan Uthe; two step-grandchildren, William and Stuart Corson; one step-great-grandson, Spencer; one sister, Merlene (Paul) Whisenand, of Kelley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Gilbert Lutheran Church.

Stevens Memorial Chapel and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
