Don Stanley Martin Jr. passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, in Prairie Village, Kan. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames, with interment of ashes in Iowa State University Cemetery.

Don Stanley Martin Jr. was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Indianapolis, Ind. He attended public schools there and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School at 16. He later received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and Ph.D. in chemistry from California Institute of Technology. Upon completion of his doctorate work in 1941, he was recruited to work on the Manhattan project, first at Northwestern University and later at Los Alamos, N.M. After the war, he joined the Chemistry Department at Iowa State College where he taught, conducted research, and published as a tenured professor until his retirement in 1985 as Professor Emeritus. During his career at ISU, he particularly enjoyed developing and mentoring his graduate students and following their post academic careers. Many of these students continued to maintain correspondence with Don through his lifetime.

He married Marion Adele Campbell Dec. 20, 1949, in Albany, N.Y. They made their home in Ames and raised three children. They were active members of Collegiate Presbyterian Church, avid bridge players, and enjoyed gardening, golfing and traveling. Following his retirement, they spent their winter months in Venice, Fla. He and Marion played bridge competitively and ultimately achieved Life Master ranking.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Campbell Martin, of Prairie Village, Kan.; sister, Ruth Martin Love, of Muncie, Ind.; daughter, Marion Martin Summers and son-in-law Doug Summers, of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; son, Don Stanley Martin III and daughter-in-law Randa Berchtold Martin, of The Woodlands, Texas; and daughter, Laura Martin Luckert and son-in-law Richard William Luckert, of Prairie Village, Kan.; grandchildren, Ryan D. Summers and wife Danyel, Scott M. Summers, Benjamin A. Martin, and Kimberly M. Martin; and great-grandchildren, Raine Summers and Alexis Summers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don Stanley Martin and Laura Beck Martin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don's name to a charity of your choice.
