Richard "Dick" Wendell Bourne, 80, of Calimesa, Calif., formerly of Ames, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, of congestive heart failure. Private services and burial is at Riverside National Cemetery in California.
Richard was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Ames, the son of Elsie and Leslie Bourne. He graduated from Ames High School in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Italy, earned the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Wilma Holmes, and they had three children, but divorced while the children were young.
He loved baseball and had exceptional skills. He played catcher on Ames city teams. He was a happy, fun-loving guy. He worked at Ames service stations, Montgomery Ward and an Iowa State College men's rooming house. He also lived in Boone, Davenport and Florida, but enjoyed later years in California. He was a proud member of the VFW.
He is survived by children, Susan Marie Schroeder, Margaret Gomez, of Des Moines, and Roger, of Rapid City, S.D.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Wayne, of Dewey, Ariz., Gary, of Sun City, Ariz., Alvin, of Clear Lake, Virginia Goehring, of Marion, and Geneva Yarne, of Marion; and many nieces and nephews from coast to coast.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Wilma.
He is missed by family; friends; special friend, Mary; and dog, Cuddles II.
