Mildred Tempel, age 91, died Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Bethany Manor in Story City after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kamrar. Burial followed at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Mernorials may be given to the Bethany Life Foundation_ at 614- Elm Street Suite 3 in Story City, Iowa 50248.
Mildred Winifred Tempel was born July 5, 1915 on the family farm two miles north and a half mile west of Jewell to Fred Henry and Blanche (Mortenson) Buchholtz. She grew up on the farm which was one of the first farmsteads in Hamilton County dating back to 1864. She attended country school then located one rnile north of Jewell for first grade and later graduated from Jewell High School in 1934. She married Oriole Tempel on Dec. 31, 1934 in Dubuque. They moved to Kamrar where Oriole operated a gasoline service business before returning to the family farm in 1942.
As a young woman, Mildred is remembered for her vocal abilities often singing for community and church events. She was the soloist to introduce Henry Wallace at a Farm Bureau organizing event. Throughout her life on the farm she participated with her husband in almost all phases of farming activities, including field preparation and harvesting. Mildred and Oriole traveled widely and enjoyed cattle buying trips to the ranches of Nebraska and Wyoming and frequent fishing trips to Lake Milac and White Fish Chain in Minnesota. Mildred remained on the farm until age 85 when she moved to Bethany Manor in Story City.
Mildred will be missed by her family and friends. Mildred has one son, Norman (Dianne) Tempel of Estes Park, Colorado; three grandchildren, Dan (Jackie) Tempel of Seminole, Florida, Scott (Liza) Tempel of Erie, Colorado, and Cindy Snell of Otsego, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Chris, Pat, Anders, Skylar, and Josephine Tempel, and Matthew and Samantha Snell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Oriole in 1988, and a sister, Evelyn Mohler.
