Karen Kay McCarl, daughter of Charles Edward Guthrie and Edith Georgia South Guthrie, was born Dec. 5, 1943 in Osceola, Iowa. She passed away June 6, 2007 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 63.

Karen attended school in Murray. She was united in marriage to Mitchell McCarl on May 31, 1958 in Murray. Their marriage was blessed with five children. The family moved to Roland, Iowa in 1966 where they lived until 2006 when they moved to Lorimor. Karen was employed at a turkey processing plant, Bethany Manor and Caseys in Roland.

Karen served as a leader of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a Sunday School teacher and attended Bible study. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Murray and the Church of God's Prophecy. She always smiled and found the good in people. She had an infectious laugh and had many friends. She enjoyed crocheting (for Bethany Manor) and doing cross stitch. She collected dolls, Coke memorabilia and hummingbirds. She enjoyed watching TV, playing cards, and belonged to a bowling league.

Karen was preceded in death by her father; sister, Twyla Hudson; and brother-in-law, Darrell Jones.

Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Edith Patton; husband, Mitchell McCarl, Sr. of Lorimor; children, Cindy McCarl of Goldfield, Crystal Coleman (Jonn) of Council Bluffs, Mitchell McCarl, Jr. (Donna) of Ankeny, Kelly Moberly (Mark) of Webster City, Doyle McCarl (Julie) of Roland; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Elisha Jones of Spring Hill; brother, Gary Guthrie (Nancy) of Denver, MO; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola on Saturday, June 9 at 2:30 p.m. with interment following at Murray Cemetery. Pastor Brian McCracken officiated; recorded songs were "Amazing Grace", "Old Rugged Cross" and "I'll Fly Away". Casket bearers were: Joe Askvig, Nathan McCarl, Mark Moberly, Scott Patton, Josh Ewing, Chuck Hudson; honorary casket bearers were: Dwayne Iiams and Austin Whitmore. Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be decided at a later date.
