Roy Thomas Buttry (1913-2008)

Roy Thomas Buttry 94, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Rolling Green Village. Graveside services were held Tuesday in the Colo Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. He was born January 27, 1913 in Thomasboro, Illinois to William Charles and Emma Mae (Addison) Buttry. In 1913 his family moved to Story County, Ia. where Roy attended rural schools in the Colo area.

On November 12, 1938 he married Helen Marie Hickman in Colo, IA. They lived and farmed in Story and Boone County where their four children were born.

For over 25 years he owned and operated Roy's Texaco Service, also known as Roy's Phillips 66 in the earlier years.

Roy was a volunteer on the Nevada Fire Department, serving as an active member from 1960 through 1977. During part of those years he served as assistant fire chief. In the 1977 city mayoral election, Roy was elected mayor of Nevada and served one four-year term. He officially assumed office in January 1978, at the age of 65. Roy retired in the fall of 1978, selling his gas service station business.

Roy is survived by four children; Shirley (Paul) Gray of Nevada, Garry (Sharon) Buttry of Raleigh, NC, Sharon (Jim) Poston of Haysville, KS and Wayne (Debra) Buttry of Albuquerque, NM; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Delores (Carl) Buttry; and many nieces, nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen; three sisters - Lola Barr, Ruby Christian and Beulah Hagen Van Scoy; four brothers ? Wayne, Russell, Henry and Carl; one granddaughter Sherri Jo Heenan; two nephews - Rick Buttry, Jim Christian. Roy was the last survivor of his siblings.

Visitation was held Monday evening at the Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada. A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Nevada Volunteer Fire Department.
