Betty Carter, 73, of Ames, died Sunday, Dec. 16. Services are pending for Friday, Dec. 21, with Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Betty A. Carter, 73, of Ames, died Sunday, Dec. 16, at home following a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Betty Carter was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Milton, Ind., to Howard C. and Sara E. (Depew) Gibson. She graduated from Mount Summit, Ind., High School. She attended Ball State College for two years. She was employed by New Castle Library for four years and Marion County, Ind., Public Health for three years.

She married Samuel C. Townsend and was a stay-at-home mother for their two sons until 1973. She married Dick Carter Nov. 20, 1976. She was employed by Iowa State University Electrical Engineering Department as a technical typist and academic advisor until she retired Jan. 4, 1994.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed square dancing, cross stitch and sewing.

She is survived by her husband, Dick Carter, of Ames; one son, Stephen Lloyd (Sandra) Townsend, of Cambridge; one stepdaughter, Rachelle C. (Timothy) Wilcox, of Tennessee; two grandsons, Stephen Lee (Patricia) Townsend, of Ames, and Scott L. Townsend, of Cambridge; one granddaughter, Ashley N. Harlow, of Tennessee; and three brothers, Gene (Judy) Gibson, of Indiana, Harry Gibson, of Pennsylvania, and Walter (Beverly) Gibson, of Indiana.

She was preceded in death by one son, H. Anthony "Tony" Townsend, and her parents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines.
