Robert William Curry was born February 2, 1921, in Farmington, Minn., the son of William and Leona (Gleason) Curry. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1940, attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1947. He married Marilynn Ellis in St. Paul, Minn., in 1947. They lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis before moving to New Hampton, Iowa, in 1951 to own a hardware store, moving to Ames in 1957.

Bob was a manager for Northwestern National Life Insurance Company, Minneapolis (now ReliaStar) since 1956. He served on the Ames School Board, on the board of Ames International Orchestra Festival Association, on the board of the Octagon Center for the Arts of Ames, and was president of the Ames Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the United Church of Christ Congregational of Ames, Ames Choral Society, Ames Heartland Senior Services Band, and Ames Lions Club where he was the top ticket seller for their turkey dinner fundraisers.

Bob returned to his clarinet after 50 years, challenged himself by learning to play the saxophone at the age of 80, and took great pleasure in playing in the Heartland Senior Services Band in his later years. He was also interested in photography and framed many of his photographs. He and Marilynn sang in their choir, sang programs of love songs, and sang duets in the Heartland Senior Services Variety Shows for nine years. He had a genuine interest in people and interviewed everyone he met.

Bob earned two professional degrees CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) in 1967 and CFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Marilynn, son, William, of Ann Arbor, Mich; a daughter, Carolyn (David) Hakes, of Cedar Falls; a brother, John, of Bloomington, Minn.; a sister, Helen Pearson, of Nashville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Madelyn and Rachel Hakes; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Allan.

Bob has donated his body to The University of Iowa for scientific purposes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ Congregational of Ames, or directed to the family. Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
