Russell Duane "Butch" Clayberg, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. Burial will be in Mamrelund Cemetery outside Randall. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.

Russell Duane "Butch" Clayberg was born March 9, 1935, in Story City, to Earl (E.T.) and Wanda (Wierson) Clayberg. He graduated from Story City High School in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in August of that year. He married Diane Ihlene (Brown) Clayberg Sept. 7, 1957, in Story City. Their union was blessed with six children.

He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and retired in 1990. He owned and operated the Story City and K-Jet Car Washes in Story City. His many hobbies included picking up and delivering cars for Gookin Ford, building and remodeling homes, watching NASCAR races, golfing, playing cards and enjoying coffee with his buddies and - most especially - attending every concert, play, ballgame and special event in the lives of his wife, his children and grandchildren. He was a founding member of the Roland-Story Athletic Booster Club, a member of the Story City Development Corporation, a former Story City Council member and a member and former trustee of Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; six children, Cathy (Mark) Hermanson, of Story City, Scott (Mary), of Dallas Center, Kelly (Bruce) Leuschen, of Story City, Brett (Megan), of Pella, Stacy (Matt) Soderstrum, of Story City, and Kent, of Pella. Also surviving him are two brothers, James "Stoney" (Barb), of Story City, and David (Charlene), of Marcus; and two sisters, Lois Christian, of Story City, and Sandra (Jack) South, of Phoenix. He leaves behind 16 beloved grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Irene (Duane) Goodmanson; and one infant grandson, Nicholas Ryan Clayberg.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is in charge of arrangements.
