Charles Perry Shearer, son of Elias W. and Eliza Shearer, was born at Collins, Feb. 15, 1877, and spent his early life in that community, attending Collins high school. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers' college in 1900, taught school in Iowa until 1903, when he moved to Cumberland and was engaged in the insurance business until the organization of the Cumberland Savings bank on Jan. 6, 1905. Mr Shearer served as bookkeeper in the bank for one year and was named cashier in 1906 and president in 1937, in which capacity he served until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1953.

Mr. Shearer was one of the original stockholders of the Cumberland Savings bank and served his community in many official capacities during his 50 years of active business life.

Charles P. Shearer and Edna Thompson were married at Cumberland on Nov. 24, 1904, and spent all of their married life here. He was a member of the Cumberland Christian church, a charter member of Radium Lodge No. 629 A.F. & A.M., Cumberland, the Des Moines Consistory, also the local Lions club.

He is survived by his widow and two children, Dr. Tom E. Shearer, Caldwell, Ida., and Mrs. Horace L. Draper, Englewood, Colo.; three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Bradford Stevens, Collins.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Cumberland Christian church, the Rev. Frank Goodwin officiating, and interment in Greenwood cemetery.
