October 21, 1937Miss Lucile Douglass, 43, for the past four years superintendent of schools of Story county, died early Monday from a heart attack, at the home of her aunt, Mrs. W. L. Tipton, at Nevada, where she had an apartment.
She was taken ill Sunday night after retiring, and a physician was called. he remained with her until about 2 a.m., about which time Miss Douglass dropped off to sleep. Mrs. Tipton, who was with her during the night, stated that death came probably between 5 and 6 a.m., it being near the latter hour when she went to the bedside and found that her niece was dead.
Cause of death was given as heart trouble, aggravated by a severe cold and a chronic bronchial asthmatic condition from which she had been a long sufferer.
News of her death was a great shock to innumerable friends, and the bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of all.
Miss Douglass had been superintendent of the Story county schools since Sept. 1, 1933, after she had served as principal of the Sheffield high school for two years. She was re-elected in 1936 for a second three-year term.
Lucile Douglass was born at Maxwell, July 28, 1894, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Douglass.
She was a graduate of the Maxwell high school, attended University of California one summer and was graduated from the State University of Iowa. during her university career she taught school in Union Township and later at Kalona and Pomeroy.
Following her graduation from the state university in 1926, she was elected to a position as normal training critic in the Kimball county school, at Kimball, Neb., where she remained for five years.
Miss Douglass had been eminently successful in her work as a county school administrative and was recognized in state educational circles as one of the outstanding figures in the work.
She leaves besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Douglass of Maxwell; her brothers Dudley G. Douglass, associated with the father, who is dean of the Story County bar association, in the practice of law at Maxwell, and the brother Emlin Douglass, engaged in the mercantile business at Sac City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Maxwell Presbyterian church, in charge of the Rev. Jos. M. Kennedy of Nevada. Interment was at Maxwell.
