THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, November 27, 2007.
Wayne Varland, 65, of Story City and formerly of Radcliffe, died Monday, Nov. 26, at Bethany Manor in Story City after a courageous battle with both Multiple Myeloma and Parkinson's disease. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov 29, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe.
Wayne Varland graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1960 and from Waldorf College in 1962. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science from Iowa State University. He served with the U.S. Army and was stationed primarily at Fort Knox, Ky.
He was employed at Jewell Distributing in Jewell for a number of years and most recently at the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames. He loved the outdoors and his greatest passion was fishing.
He is survived by his daughter, Sara (Chris) Jansen, and two granddaughters, of Lynnville. He also is survived by his mother, Lois Varland, of Radcliffe; one sister, Marilyn (Ronald "Red") Stenberg, of Ames; three brothers, Larry, of Radcliffe, Kenneth (Carolyn), of New Ulm, Minn., and Robert (Tammy), of Fort Dodge; six nephews and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, LaVerne.
