THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, November 18, 2007.
Margaret Christian Nelson, 95, of Story City, died peacefully in her sleep Friday, Nov. 16, at Bethany Manor, where she was a resident.
Margaret Christian Nelson was born June 1, 1912, in rural Jefferson to Earl and Mabel (Wenner) Louk. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1929. Upon graduation, she traveled to Nevada, where she worked for the Donnelly Corporation. While working in Nevada she met Maynard Christian. They married April 6, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. During their marriage, they lived in Roland where Margaret worked for Central Iowa Mutual Insurance Company. To this union, four children were born.
Maynard died March 17, 1962. On September 3, 1984, Margaret married her long-time friend, Kenneth Nelson of Nevada. Margaret and Kenny enjoyed traveling and spending time with family during their short time together. Kenny died June 5, 1990. Shortly after, Margaret moved from Nevada, first to Bergen Green in Story City, then in 2002 to Bethany Manor.
Margaret was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Roland and a member of Salem's Ladies' Aide and Circles. She was also a long-time member of the Roland Wa-Tan-Ye Club.
Margaret loved life. She was an "over-comer," always having a cheerful countenance despite much adversity throughout her life. She adored her family and treasured time spent with them. She enjoyed baking - always having Kringla and chocolate chip cookies in the freezer for her children and grandchildren. Although Norwegian only by marriage, she taught her family the arts of Lefsa- and Kumla-making. Those who knew her would describe her as stubborn, but lovable and always full of fun.
Margaret is lovingly remembered by three daughters, Linda (Bruce) Koenig, of Port Richey, Fla., Norma (Lowell) Elwick, of Ames, and Paula (Alan) Sampson, of Story City; two step-sons, Tom (Jo) Nelson, of Liberty, Mo., and Jim (Mimi) Nelson of Florissant, Mo.; one brother, Dwight (Donna) Louk, of Gravois Mills, Mo.; two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Christian, of Story City, and Norma Louk of Jefferson; seven grandchildren, Karen Mooney, Greg Elwick, Robin Elwick, Kara (Rich) Schulte, Lucas Sampson, Carissa (Eric) Beer and Kylie Sampson; six step-grandchildren, Sarah Nelson, Alexis Nelson, Whitney Nelson, Rory Nelson, Tammy Nelson and Cindy Nelson; and by many nieces and nephews. She was blessed with four great-grandsons, Ashton Mooney and Jacob, Andrew and Camden Schulte.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Maynard Christian and Kenneth Nelson; a son, Charles Christian; a step-son, Bernard Nelson and wife, Rita; a grandson, Brian Koenig; and six brothers, Wayne, Chester, Russell, Darwin, Melvin and Weldon Louk.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Visitation will be immediately before from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Life Communities.
